Breaking Down California’s SB-729: What It Means for Fertility Care & IVF Coverage

Fertility care is personal, but access shouldn’t be a privilege. With the passage of California’s SB-729, more people may finally have support from their insurance when building their families.

Let’s break it down.

What SB-729 Promises

Beginning in July 2025, many California employers (those with 100+ employees) will be required to offer insurance coverage for fertility treatments. This includes IVF, IUI, egg retrievals, medications, and embryo transfers. This is a major step forward for individuals and couples, including those in the LGBTQ+ community.

Due to an extension requested by Governor Newsom, full implementation is now expected by January 2026

Know the Fine Print

Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Self-insured employers may not be required to comply with SB-729. That means your company could be exempt.
  • Open enrollment dates matter. If your plan renews July 2025, coverage may begin then. If your plan resets in January, it could be 2026 before you see benefits.
  • Some state plans may not roll out until 2027.

The best thing you can do now? Contact your HR department and ask if your plan will offer SB-729 fertility benefits and when.

Don’t Wait on Your Fertility Health

While this legislation brings hope, time matters. Fertility declines with age, and every body is different.

If you’re feeling stuck, burned out by prior treatments, or wondering if IVF is right for you, now’s the time to get clarity. A consult, a semen analysis, or a simple ovarian reserve test can offer valuable insight - insurance or not.
